Midwifery Research and Education Unit

The Midwifery Research and Education Unit (MREU) at Hannover Medical School is leading national and international projects in the area of midwifery and maternal health.

The position is part of the Horizon2020 five-years project 847824: Action Leveraging Evidence to Reduce perinatal morTality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa (ALERT). The objective is to develop and evaluate a multifaceted intervention to strengthen the implementation of evidence-based midwifery interventions and respectful care to reduce in-facility maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in Benin (Centre de Recherche en Reproduction Humaine et an Démographie), Malawi (University of Malawi), Tanzania (Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and Aga Khan University East Africa) and Uganda (Makerere University). The European partners of ALERT are Karolinska Institutet (Sweden, PI: Ass. Prof. Dr. Claudia Hanson) and the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Belgium).

The unit holds the European Master of Science in Midwifery Programme which offers postgraduate online-education in the field of clinical research and evidence-based clinical practice in midwifery. An undergraduate midwifery programme is currently in the planning stage.
